What we do

We turn ideas into infrastructure on the ground

Our team has taken concepts all the way to built infrastructure, and everything in between. We work across that whole arc and are equally willing to take a single piece of it.

The difficulty our clients face is rarely ambition. It is matching the right technology to the problem in front of them — and that is the gap we fill. We enable technology leapfrogging: helping a client understand the concept, formulating the design around it, and carrying the documentation and approvals that follow.

01

Project development

We take a concept to the point where a funder can assess it — through the screening, the design and the local approvals that projects most often die on.

Origination

  • Opportunity identification and screening
  • Introductions to counterparties
  • Surveys and stakeholder mapping

Design

  • Matching technology and capacity to the market
  • Identifying areas requiring further study
  • Pilot project design

Approvals

  • Project documentation
  • Local development approvals
  • Permitting strategy
02

Capital raising and development finance

Preparing a project to survive the scrutiny it will get, then running the process. We know what development banks, climate funds and concessional windows require because our people have assessed these submissions from the inside.

Where the money comes from

  • Multilateral and bilateral development banks
  • Climate finance of various kinds — the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility among them
  • Carbon credit mechanisms, such as the Government of Japan's Joint Crediting Mechanism
  • Concessional and blended finance facilities
  • Private and strategic investors

What we prepare

  • Financial models and sensitivities
  • Submission documentation
  • Carbon and climate-benefit cases
  • Responses to due diligence

Through to close

  • Investor and lender process management
  • Negotiation support
  • Conditions precedent tracking
03

Procurement and delivery

The stage where well-funded projects still fail. We design procurement that produces real competition, draft documents that survive challenge, and stay involved through implementation and safeguards compliance.

Procurement

  • Market assessment for high-technology projects
  • Procurement modality design
  • Supplier roadshows
  • Bidding documents and bid evaluation support

Our founder convened the CAREC Energy Investment Forum on unlocking private investment in high-technology projects, Batumi 2018 — see Speaking.

Implementation

  • Pilot project implementation
  • Consultant and expert sourcing
  • Terms of reference and team assembly

Compliance

  • Environmental and social safeguards
  • Climate compliance audit
04

Independent review and expert advisory

For boards, funds and lenders who need a second opinion from someone who has built and assessed these projects rather than only modelled them. Technical review, commercial review, peer review of feasibility work, and expert input to committees.

Review

  • Technical and commercial due diligence
  • Peer review of feasibility studies
  • Technology assessment

Advisory

  • Board and investment committee input
  • Country and sector strategy
  • Regulatory and policy assessment

Capability

  • Training, workshops and study tours
  • University train-the-trainer partnerships
  • New technology curriculum development

Country Energy Transition Package

A defined engagement for governments and national agencies that have made a net zero commitment and need a credible route to it. Rather than a strategy document that sits on a shelf, the package produces the four things that determine whether transition investment actually happens: a roadmap, an honest read on the regulatory framework, an incentive design that has worked somewhere else, and a route to the money.

Renewable energy roadmap

A sequenced implementation plan — what gets built, in what order, at what scale, and what has to be true for each step to be financeable.

Regulatory assessment

What the current framework permits, what it blocks, and which specific instruments need to change. Written for the officials who would have to change them.

Incentive design

Sector by sector: what has worked in comparable markets, what has been tried and failed, and why. Australia's household solar and battery programmes are the most instructive recent case, and we know them closely.

Access to climate finance

Which windows the country is actually eligible for, what each requires, and the documentation to approach them — concessional, carbon and blended.

The package concludes with a suite of bankable project concepts rather than recommendations: specific investments, sized and structured, that move the country toward its commitment. We treat adaptation and mitigation together, because in most of the markets we work in the same investment does both — and because funders increasingly expect to see them assessed as one.

How we engage

Retainer, fixed-scope assignment, or a success-based mandate on a capital raise. Which one fits depends on the stage of the project and how much sits with your own team.
